Tom from The Undateables 2016: what happened after the show

We at Flame Introductions are keeping our fingers crossed for Tom, the Welsh rugby player who has become something of a legend since appearing on The Undateables.

The Bridgend boy appeared on the first show of series 5 of the successful Channel 4 show, on which Flame Introductions founder Christine is one of the professional matchmakers helping disabled people looking for love. He revealed that he has Tourette's and Asperger's Syndrome, and that his condition makes it difficult for him to have a relationship. And it's fair to say he made something of an impression. Here's what happened after the credits rolled...

1. THE INTERNET WENT INTO MELTDOWN AS TOM'S TWITTER FOLLOWING WENT FROM 700 TO 24,000 AND COUNTING...

2. TOM WON OVER A NEW ARMY OF FANS WHEN HE SHOWED US ALL HOW MUCH HE LOVES HIS MUM.

3. TOM ADMITTED HE WAS SLIGHTLY OVERWHELMED BY THE OUTPOURING OF LOVE AND THE VOLUME OF SUPPORT FROM FANS OF #THEUNDATEABLES

4. PHASE TWO OF INTERNET MELTDOWN HAPPENED WHEN TOM APPEARED ON ITV'S LOOSE WOMEN AND OPENED UP ABOUT HIS JOURNEY.

He told the daytime panel show that growing up was difficult. “I didn’t get diagnosed with Tourette’s until I was 15, and Asperger’s when I was 21… With Asperger’s I find it hard to show emotion. Obviously I love my mum but I wouldn’t give her a hug or nothing like that. I have got [emotions] but I find it difficult to show.”

5. TOM REVEALED THAT HE WANTS TO USE ALL THE POSITIVE ATTENTION TO RAISE AWARENESS OF AND HELP CHILDREN WITH ASPERGER'S SYNDROME.

“It’s felt like a massive weight has been lifted off my shoulders and I can just be myself…It’s good how much awareness it’s raised," he told the ITV audience.

"I’ve had children with Asperger’s thank me. You can’t change who you are. I’m hoping to set my charity up to help younger children with Asperger’s through sport. In sport everyone comes together as a team. Asperger’s is forgotten.”

6. TOM'S MUM GIVES HER SON'S POPULARITY ANOTHER BOOST - AS IF HE NEEDS IT.

“He’s a lovely son. You just want the best for your children, don’t you? In our eyes he’s always just been Tom…nothing wrong with him. Tom always feels inferior to people. When he was little he was always classed as a naughty boy and being his mum I knew that wasn’t the case. So from the age of five I pushed to find out what was going on. [When he was diagnosed] it was a huge relief. We’re overwhelmed with all the support from this week.”

7. THERE'S EVEN BEEN SOME FAN LOVE FOR FLAME INTRODUCTIONS FOUNDER CHRISTINE, AFTER SHE REVEALED HER OWN SOFT SPOT FOR WELSH TOM.
