The Undateables 2016: Episode 2 Roundup (in which we meet Lucas, James and Tom)

The second episode of series five of The Undateables pulls on our heartstrings as we follow three more hopefuls looking for love. (Catch up on the first episode of series five here)

Tom, James and Lucas are three very different personalities who have something in common - their conditions make them wary of putting themselves out there when it comes to relationships with the opposite sex. Despite this fact, episode two of this year's series sees them face their fears and take the plunge into the world of dating - with some hilarious, tender and ultimately successful consequences...

INTRODUCING LUCAS

19-year-old design student Lucas from Leicester is a daredevil when it comes to sports, but isn't so daring when it comes to asking out girls. He's been bullied and taunted in the past because of his facial disfigurement, and his lack of confidence means he's never had a kiss or a date.

"It's kind of like stage fright. my hands shake just thinking about it," he says.

After Lucas met with Christine from Flame Introductions, she declared it time he faced up to the challenge of putting himself out there: "He's a lovely young man - he's just got to get over this barrier of thinking all the time 'I'm not good enough'. It's nonsense!"

Just three weeks later there was a match for Lucas. So off he went to an extreme sports centre where he met the very lovely 17-year-old Alexandra, who, like him, had never had a date and suffers from shyness. Things went well, numbers were exchanged and, as Lucas put it, "I've been on a high ever since. It's been wonderful!"

"MY FACE IS STARTING TO HURT FROM WHERE I'VE BEEN SMILING FOR TOO LONG."

Lucas, on getting to know Alexandra after their first date.

INTRODUCING JAMES

32-year-old James from Essex has tons of friends, a part-time job at a supermarket and an active social life through his local football club. But for the last ten years he's been waiting to meet someone special.

He has a learning disability and sometimes feels very down about being single. "When it got to Valentine's Day a lot of the years I was feeling emotionally sad when I was listening to my music which was My Heart Will Go On from Titanic," he admits.

He says that going on a date - ideally with a blue-eyed girl who enjoys soap operas and wants to go to Madame Tussauds, the London Dungeon or The Shard - would make him "the happiest man ever". And his hopes for the future are big: "If I had a girlfriend that I got on really well with maybe for the next six years and then if we both decide to get married and I'm hoping to marry her [at the football club]."

James didn't have to wait long to find a potential match in 32-year-old Claire, who also has a learning disability.

They met at a rooftop bar in central London, and though conversation was slow to get started, the ice was broken with James' impression of Ian Beale, which EastEnders fan Claire found hilarious. During a cable car ride across the Thames, James went down on one knee and asked Claire to be his girlfriend, to which she replied "Ooh that's nice...yeah!"

Their second date, at a London ice-skating rink, went just as well, and the pair agreed to meet for a third.

"DATING IS FANTASTIC! IT'S BEEN A SUCCESS TO FINALLY HAVE SOMEONE LIKE CLAIRE."

James, on what it means to him to have a girlfriend after a ten-year wait.

INTRODUCING TOM

24-year-old Harry Potter fanatic Tom from Hamsphire is looking for a magical kind of love. His autism makes him awkward in social situations and anxious about relationships, but it doesn't stop him hoping he'll meet his very own blonde-haired Luna Lovegood.

"If I had a girlfriend and she was the one for me I would treat her like she was my queen," he says. And, true to his word, when he met his match, 25-year-old Marina, he gifted her a stuffed version of Nala, from The Lion King.

An Asperger's sufferer and also new to dating, Claire was equally nervous before their meeting at the zoo. "I hope there's no awkward silences because it's a bit awkward. Because it's called awkward silences," she said.

It didn't take long for the pair to discover their shared love of all things Hogwarts, leading to an exchange of phone numbers.

"I FEEL LIKE I ONLY HAVE HALF A HEART AND MY SOULMATE OUT THERE HAS THE OTHER...WE ARE GOING TO COME TOGETHER AND BECOME ONE WHOLE HEART."

Tom, on what finding love means to him.
