The Undateables 2016: Episode 1 Roundup (in which we meet James, Tammy and Tom)

In the first episode of the all-new The Undateables, we met Tom, James and Tammy in their quests to find love, and our very own Christine, founder of Flame Introductions made an appearance...

Just as Steve Carruthers and Vicky Matthews - the couple who met on The Undateables and later married - announce that they are planning a family (congratulations, guys!), the hit Channel 4 documentary returns with more couples looking for romance.

As one of the dating agencies featured in and supporting the series, Flame Introductions founder Christine was on hand to give some of the hopefuls a dose of courage and confidence as they approached that all-important first date.

INTRODUCING JAMES

Outgoing and ambitious 22-year-old James says there’s no word in the English language that can describe enough how much he wants a girlfriend. But the South African-born student has Asperger's Syndrome, a form of Autism, and though he has been on a few dates before, he's never found romance. He's been a client of Flame Introductions for a while, and, says Christine, "He's had dates and they've been friends...but we want more than friends".

James thinks he talks too much, but, ever the optimist, he didn’t let that stop him hoping his date, courtesy of Flame Introductions, with 24-year-old Chloe, who also has Asperger's, would lead to romance…

They met for afternoon tea at a luxury hotel, and James stuck to his master plan of asking questions about Chloe before telling her too much about himself. They discussed fashion, swimming and politics, and at the end of their chat they swapped numbers and agreed to text. Chloe's verdict on the date was "Great conversation; overall he was very nice." Unfortunately, two months later James still hadn't heard from Chloe and so he was off to meet another match, Suzanna.

"How do I move on?" mused James, as he prepared to throw himself back into the dating pool. "With both my feet."

"DATING IS LIKE WADING ACROSS A MOATFUL OF RAVENOUS PIRANHAS, TRYING TO GET TO THE LOVE CASTLE ON THE OTHER SIDE."

Asperger's sufferer James, on the perils of dating

Armed with a sizeable text book on Stalin, which he intended to gift to the 30-year-old philosophy student who also has Asperger's, he set off to a country pub in Oxford.

After a chat about twentieth century history, the pair took a boat trip down the river, during which James told Suzanna he'd "probably" jump into the water after her should they capsize.

"My first impressions are positive. She can have an intelligent conversation and she's very beautiful too. I haven't talked this much since the last time I was on a plane," was James' verdict.

But just as a second date with Suzanna looked to be on the cards, Chloe was back in touch. James invited her around for Sunday lunch, and, taken with James' roast potatoes, Chloe agreed to see him again. Watch this space.

INTRODUCING TAMMY

34-year-old Tammy never had trouble attracting men, until, two years ago, she was left facially disfigured by Meningococcal Septicaemia, a life-threatening blood poisoning. Facing yet more reconstructive surgery, she can’t help fearing rejection from the opposite sex. "I don't like how I look, so to ask somebody else to like how I look is a big thing," she says.

Determined that she will meet someone to share her life with, the first episode of series 5’s The Undateables sees her meet up with 47-year-old bicycle engineer, Gary.

The pair took a barge trip and discovered they share an adventurous spirit. Over a glass of wine, Tammy opened up on her disfigurement, and was moved to tears when Gary admitted that being bald, wearing glasses and having a "funny-shaped" head means that he too has his insecurities. Her confidence sky-rocketed when he told her: "You dress beautifully; you've got lovely eyes; we seem to have a lot in common."

"I WAS SHOCKED AND IT WAS UPSETTING BUT I'VE ALWAYS BEEN AN OPTIMISTIC PERSON AND KNOW THAT YOU'VE GOT TO APPRECIATE WHAT YOU HAVE NOW."

"I JUST WANT TO GET ON WITH MY LIFE. I WANT TO SEIZE EVERY OPPORTUNITY. AND TO FIND A MAN TO DO THAT WITH WOULD BE FANTASTIC. "

INTRODUCING TOM

The 26-year-old rugby player isn't short of female attention, but finds dating daunting on account of his Tourette’s, meaning he has physical tics, and Asperger’s, which makes it difficult for him to make eye contact and open up. In the past he’s always tried to hide this from his dates, but now, resolute to finally overcome his dating difficulties, he vows to reveal his true self to 22-year-old fashion graduate Megan.

They met at a local pub, and over a drink both admitted that they dislike the awkwardness of first dates. After going horse riding together, numbers were swapped and Megan admitted feeling attracted to Tom.
