5 New Year Resolutions to improve your relationships in 2019

Love them or loathe them, New Year Resolutions are a thing. But they don't always have to be about giving something up or total transformation. In fact, the more realistic and achievable your goals, the more likely it is that you'll stick to them.

Where relationships are concerned—whether it's overhauling the one you're in or getting back into the dating scene—now's a great time to think about mini goals you can stick to in order to achieve the kind of love you've always wanted.

1. REKINDLE AN OLD FRIENDSHIP

It could be someone from your university days who you've lost touch with, a former colleague who slipped away when you switched jobs, or a friendship that just fell by the wayside for one reason or another. Making contact again feels good, and can make you feel reconnected to yourself and your life goals. It's also a great way to open new doors—meeting up with an old buddy can lead to invitations to events where that special someone might just be waiting behind the door.

2. JOIN A NEW CLUB OR CLASS

Carpentry, creative writing, swimming or zumba... the list of new extracurricular activities there are on your doorstep is likely to be vast. So do some investigation, pick your pastime, and just get out there and do it. Learning a new skill, indulging in a hobby you love, meeting new friends: it's all hugely confidence boosting, and we all know how attractive confidence is to the right partner in your life.

3. PRACTISE SELF LOVE

Here at Flame, we're firm believers in the old adage that you have to love yourself before you can invite anyone else to love you. That's why we're suggesting that your primary New Year resolution should involve self care. Think long and hard about what that really means for you: Getting more sleep? Discovering a healthier diet or lifestyle? Carving out more "me time"? Whatever it is, make a plan for how you can gift that to yourself and make sure you commit every bit as much as you would if you were making a promise to a friend or family member.

4. BELIEVE YOU CAN ACHIEVE YOUR GOAL

A recent survey found that New Year resolutions about finding a great partner are much more likely to be successful than any related to diet or exercise. So if finding love is more important to you than getting a six pack, you're already one step ahead of the game. Spend some time thinking about what really motivates you. Is it having friends check in on how you're doing with your goal? Is it dotting motivational affirmations around your home? Whatever it is, now's the time to indulge in that resource as a way to boost your chances of success. Good luck!
