London by candlelight – keep the flame alive this Christmas with the city’s best candlelit locations for romantic dates

In fact, candlelight is scientifically proven to make us more attractive to one another - back in 1965, psychologists discovered that both men and women find their partner most attractive when their pupils are dilated by low light.

So, being the classic romantics we are at Flame Introductions, we've rounded up our favourite London locations for candlelit dates in the capital. Happy dating!

1. For culture lovers - Sir John Soane's Museum

Born in 1753, Sir John Soane was a classic rags to riches story - the son of a bricklayer who rose to the top of his profession to become the famed architect of the Bank Of England. When he wasn't designing some of the capital's best-known buildings, he was collecting treasures from his global travels. On his death in 1837 he left his beautiful London townhouse to the British state. The house and all its ancient wonders are free to explore, and on the first Tuesday of each month is lit exclusively by candles. The bars and restaurants of Covent Garden are a stone's throw.

2. For a magical Christmas date - Royal Albert Hall

The evocative combination of the finest classic music, angelic voices and a candlelit Royal Albert Hall makes this annual event the ultimate Christmas date. There are also readings from Dickens, the occasional sing-a-long, and a luxurious bar where the Prosecco flows. This is a chance to get your winter finest on for a date designed to get you in the mood for Christmas, and hopefully love!

Kensington Gore, London SW7 2AP; Tube: South Kensington; £17-56; various dates throughout December. www.royalalberthall.com

3. For vintage romantics and jazz lovers - The Candlelight Club

A throwback to the days of speakeasies, this 1920-style pop-up bar event takes place twice a month in locations across London, lit only by hundreds of candles. Partygoers of all ages don their Gatsby-inspired finest for this night of dancing to live jazz bands, and free-flowing cocktails (along with your ticket you'll receive a password to get you safely past the prohibition police!). The early bird catches the worm where tickets are concerned and be prepared to travel - locations are disclosed to ticket holders a few days before the event.

4. For a romantic meal you'll never forget - 1901 Restaurant

No London restaurant does candlelight quite like 1901 in the five star boutique Andaz hotel on Liverpool Street. On the last Wednesday of each month, a team of ten set about filling this former ballroom with thousands of candles. The resulting glow makes for a truly memorable experience, made all the more special by a live pianist and a sumptuous menu.
