Dogs are a couple’s best friend

It’s a time of year when we’re frequently reminded that a dog isn’t just for Christmas, it’s for life. What we don’t hear so often is that those pet-loving souls who decide to adopt a hound this festive or any other season, won’t just have the joy of a waggy tail to greet them each day; they’ll also benefit from a stronger relationship with their other half.

A survey by Rover.com found that couples who share responsibility for a dog are happier than those who don’t have fur babies. Taking on the huge commitment of getting a dog is, apparently, a great indicator of a couple’s commitment to each other, and, furthermore, can help them create an even more solid bond.

Six out of ten dog owners say that their relationship is stronger for having a pet. And half say that having a pup ensures they spend more time together than they otherwise would, whether that’s weekend walks in the park or evenings shared on the sofa discussing how cute their ickle wickle pickle is.

The vast majority (88%) of participants said that taking responsibility for a furry life is a huge undertaking, and that their relationship with their partner was strengthened by sharing this commitment to another being. In short, having another pair of hands to scoop the poop is a big deal.

Most interestingly of all though is the discovery that almost half of doggy co-owners said that they thought their partner was sexier after getting a dog together. Though on the flip side, one in six said their sex life went downhill after a pawsome friend took up nocturnal residence in their bed.

Finally, if you’re reading this while single, know that having a penchant for pooches could put you ahead in the dating stakes. The survey also showed that 36% of people would consider it a deal breaker if the person they were dating wasn’t a ‘dog person’.
