Dating websites and apps. For every marriage made in heaven to have arisen from a digital introduction, there's a horror story or two. But between the two extremes there's a whole host of reasons why the Internet might fall short when it comes to discovering your soulmate.
The big reason, according to a survey for Esquire magazine, is that a large chunk of profile owners—63 per cent in fact—aren't actually there to find true, everlasting love, or even to find a date or a hook up. They're just bored. Yep, you read that right—more than six out of ten profiles you come across could be there simply because the owner had nothing better to do than to upload their picture and make a list of their hobbies for your reading pleasure.
Of course there are many other reasons why people who aren't looking for love–either because they're already in relationships or they're just not into the couple thing right now—might waste their time swiping, liking, favouriting or whatever other tool their particular site uses to make connections.
One theory is that they're there for the validation. Each 'Like' or its equivalent is an ego stroke. Every time someone matches with them, they're essentially being told that they're fancied.
Another reason users take to dating websites is they simply want to connect—albeit in an impersonal, digital space–with others. Which is fine if all you're looking for is some late night emailing or text banter. But if you're hoping this is the start of something bigger and more meaningful and the other person, well, isn't, then it's a recipe for wasted time and hurt feelings.
Providing someone's being upfront about their motives, there's nothing wrong with any of the above. But it does mean that your chances of bumping into Mr or Mrs Right are incredibly slim.
